Stokes Seeds


Need: Stokes Seeds has been in business since 1883 and is one of the largest seed providers for nurseries and home gardeners in North America. Yet, their growth was held back by an old and inflexible e-commerce system. 

Stokes' operations were using a custom built AS400 system that managed inventory and shipping. The E-commerce system had to integrate smoothly with that system.

Finally, since Stokes sells in both the USA and Canada, pricing and sales tax calculations had to work for both countries.

Solution: Stokes began discussions with Highland in mid 2009. Stokes already had an Intershop e-commerce system that Highland was helping to maintain.

Highland began extensive upgrades to their standard SiteRocker platform to handle US/Canadian pricing tables, as well as Canadian VAT sales tax calculations.

Highland also wrote a custom Java application to send XML order information to the Stokes AS400 through a dedicated VPN. The application also updated statuses in the SiteRocker platform.

After months of testing and tweaking, the new Stokes site went live March 1, 2010.
